Back by popular demand, Sarah Van Buren (SVB) returns via Shaker Museum to facilitate another Youth DJ Workshop for ages 9 – 16. This four-day intensive will include a series of studio days with a final performance when our newly trained DJs take the stage for the whole community to enjoy. Participants will gain knowledge and skills related to analog music-making, a collection of their own vinyl records, and a chance to take home their own record player (based on workshop attendance).

Today’s kids are instantly attracted to the idea of DJing. Although that usually means swiping around on a smart phone or clicking around on a computer, the origins of DJing are very analog. Kids who learn and practice DJing with vinyl records (including all kinds of sound experimentation therein) develop fine motor skills and learn about musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, tempo, and pitch. This workshop is open-ended, encapsulating all genres of music and sound experimentation. It may lead to dancing, it may lead to grooving, it may lead to an “aha!” thinking moment. It will definitely lead to collaboration and cooperation as kids share equipment, music, and ideas. Overall, we’re all along for the ride, because it’s going to be really fun.

Every Monday at 7:30 p.m. No previous singing experience is required. For most of us, our voice is our most important medium of expression. With this voice we can sing, we can praise, we can express joy or pain, and we can teach. But often, our relationship with our voice becomes disconnected. We underestimate the effect our voice has on our bodies and our lives. This workshop is a doorway into reconnecting with your voice and expressing yourself more fully. Through a series of simple tones, or notes sung for long periods, we gently begin to observe the relationships between the voice, the body, the breath, and the self. This workshop is not affiliated with any spiritual practice. All people are welcome, and no singing experience is required. There is a short introduction and instruction, followed by 30 minutes of a guided toning series, and open discussion afterward (optional). Open to the public, but donations are graciously accepted. Skilled instructor Arobi is offering dance classes at the Hudson Library that will teach participants moves to trendy and iconic Bollywood songs in a fun, beginner-friendly environment. No experience required.

Work by installation artist Hannah Claus, photojournalist Ian Maracle, video game creator Waylon Wilson, neo-burlesque dancer Lauren Jiles, metalsmith Margaret Jacobs, animator Paulette Moore, luthier Glenn Hill, Jr., contemporary dancer Santee Smith, and the Iroquois Marching Band.
