St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund

The St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund was founded by a group of concerned citizens in 1979 following a devastating fire at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, a remarkable East Village ensemble of buildings and landscaped property dating back to 1799. Originally the Citizens to Save St. Mark's, the Landmark Fund embarked on an ambitious renewal project and—in a program that drew national attention—rebuilt the church.

The aim of the Mannahatta Project is to reconstruct the ecology of Manhattan when Henry Hudson first sailed by in 1609 and compare it to what we know of the island today. The Mannahatta Project will help us to understand, down to the level of one city block, where in Manhattan streams once flowed or where American Chestnuts may have grown, where black bears once marked territories, and where the Lenape fished and hunted.
