Matthew Ostrowski: A Theory of Meaning

Jan. 12, 2007: 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

free103point9 Online Radio

(free103point9 Event)

Friday afternoon broadcast of a piece made from Matthew Ostrowski's AIRtime residency at free103point9 Wave Farm in Oct., 2006. His description:

A Theory of Meaning
How is it that we see something when we hear something? How does language actually _work_? This is a miracle I can barely understand when an actual person is speaking to me: I hear a series of noises which activate my imagination, see things that aren't there, empathize with people that I can't see (or don't even exist). On the radio it's even more perplexing. There is no visible speaker, utterances emerge from a machine in one's living room, but yet we follow a story, imagine a person who utters these mysterious noises we call language, and understand their ideas. With no human contact, language, a force larger than we are, works.

"A Theory of Meaning" is a radio play for speakers who don't exist. More

Art's Birthday 2007

Jan. 17, 2007: 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Kunstradio, free103point9 Online Radio, and many other stations

(free103point9 Event)

Art’s Birthday 2007: Adore and be still. 100 years of radio

free103point9 will air two web streams: one will pick up the entire Kunstradio "Art's Birthday Party" feed, and another will simultaenously air a feed from various free103point9 Transmission Artists to contribute to Kunstradio's feed.

Art's Birthday Party is a celebration in memory of Robert Filliou who declared, on January 17 1963, that Art had been born exactly 1,000,000 years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. After Filliou's death in 1987, some artists began to celebrate Art's Birthday in the spirit of his concept of "The Eternal Network" or "La Fete permanente". The Birthday parties took place in different cities across the world, and artists were asked to bring birthday presents for Art – works that could be shared over the network.

On Christmas 1906, on the other hand, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden undertook the very first radio broadcast of voice and music. Luckily, he had the foresight to time his experiment exactly, its 100th anniversary practically coinciding with the 1,000,044th birthday of Art.

free103point9 joins this coordinated international broadcast from Kunstradio in Austria. January 17th, 2007 from 20:00 - 24:00 CET, 19:00 - 23:00 GMT. More

RADIO WONDERLAND
Shoes, steering wheel, boombox, laptop: turning live radio into recombinant funk. From Joshua Fried: remixer, performance artist and the youngest composer in Schirmer's American Music in the 20th Century.

TODD MERRELL SOLO PERFORMANCE
Since 1978, Todd Merrell has been fascinated with the imperceptible environment of electromagnetic radiation that shortwave radio and processing can capture, and transform into an immersive, musical environment. "The focus of the work is not on acheiving any particular musical moment, but on the ephemerality of sonic transformation itself. Unlike compositions that utilize radio in part for its referential or signifying qualities, [Merrell] is more in the minimalist tradition of relying on the primacy of the material itself. The work is a celebration of the radio as material and of the belief that minutiae and limited systems can yield rich results. Merrell studied music composition and voice at Berklee College of Music, and with composer James Sellars of the Hartt School. His works have been performed by The New York Festival Of Song, Chicago A Capella, and double bassist Robert Black of Bang On A Can Allstars.

31 Down radio theater: Pay-Phone Theater (free103point9 Transmission Artist)
represented by Mirit Tal and Shannon Sindelar
31 Down is a theater company that uses radio and network technologies as the backbone for their storytelling in performances and installations. 31 Down has provided a TRIXBOX server (based on Asterisk) for free103point9: transmission arts. Transmission Artists with free103point9 now have access to an open source PBX for use in their artwork. Mirit Tal and Shannon Sindelar, of 31 Down, will introduce the use of this server in their upcoming theater projects, including the subway pay-phone mystery installation, Canal Street Station, opening this March. http://www.31down.org

Brad Borevitz: The State of the Union
Lamenting the triumph of iconicity over rhetoricity in political speech, Brad Borevitz created the State of the Union project to consider if evidence for this assertion exists in the language of the the yearly address which stands as a controlled sample over the course of U.S. history. The website provides searchable access to the corpus of all the State of the Union addresses from 1790 to 2007, and uses visualization software which allows a user to explore how specific words gain and lose prominence over time. State of the Union focuses on the relationship between individual addresses as compared to the entire collection of addresses, highlighting what is different about each document. From this information, users are invited to try and understand the connection between politics and language -- between the state we are in, and the language which names it and calls it into being. http://www.onetwothree.net/

Tianna Kennedy (free103point9 Transmission Artist)
Tianna's artistic endeavors are collaborative explorations of human/information interaction with an emphasis on the transmission of affect. Though her work often takes shape via sound recording, web-streaming, and radio technologies, her focus inevitably returns to the people involved in the process(es). For her presentation at dorkbot, Tianna will talk about the paradoxical role of nostalgia in the avant-garde of sound technology. Along the way she'll touch on edison's gramophone, Sir Oliver Lodge's Etheric experiments, and her collaborator, Tarikh Korula's own recent archaeoacoustic stylus, which is supposed to retrieve latent ambient historical sound trapped in objects at the moment of their production. http://www.free103point9.org/artist.php?artistID=10

Michelle Nagai

Live performance series as part of [silence] show at Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS]. Performances at 4:33 p.m. on Saturdays at the Manhattan gallery, streamed live on free103point9 Online Radio.

Untitled Sit: Watch Your Baby Not the Clock
Untitled Sit is the generic label for a series of compositions originally devised for performance in private homes. Each work is centered around the presence of a still and silent seated figure, the composer. Audience members are invited to join the composer in sitting. While the composer does follow a precise and unique score for each performance, no visible or audible performance act takes place. Instead, there is a free-form exchange of sensory information encouraged between performer, viewer and environment. The score for Untitled Sit: Watch Your Baby Not the Clock draws on Nagai's current occupation as a new mother.

Brooklyn-based composer Michelle Nagai utilizes sound, physicality and concept to create site-specific performances, installations, radio broadcasts, dances, walks and other interactions that address the human state in relationship to its setting. These works and activities explore the exchange of perception between performer and audience/viewer. Nagai recognizes transmission, reception and “limbo” as continuously shifting, highly interactive states of being. She engages these states in her working process in order to open up the field of perception and action beyond that which she is herself capable of comprehending, making or doing.

Fourth Annual NYC Grassroots Media Conference

Feb. 24, 2007: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Media and Movements Beyond Borders
Grassroots struggles for justice are usually rooted in their geographic location. Yet - from police brutality on the streets of Queens and government repression in the plazas of Oaxaca, to homelessness and displacement in the Bronx to the Gulf Coast to the rise of slums in Lagos; from hunger and poverty in East New York to famine in Kenya; from wiretapping and police surveillance in our communities and military occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan - there are apparent connections in the ways people all over the world negotiate and counter similar forms of oppression and injustice. This year, the NYC Grassroots Media conference seeks to ask: What are the common threads inherent in our global struggles for social change and how does the media contribute to our understanding of the root causes of injustices faced by world communities? From educating ourselves and our government leaders to spreading our messages and recruiting broader and more diverse constituencies into our campaigns, media is central to the struggle for social justice. Therefore, the fight for better access to and representation in the media is essential for advancing peace and justice both at home and abroad. Join us for the 4th annual NYC Grassroots Media Conference as we explore these connections and strategies and work together to demand a media system that will link ourdiverse communities, connect local and international struggles, and fight for social justice across boundaries and beyond borders.

free103point9 Radio Lab panel
Podcasting 101: Creating Your Own Podcast
10 a.m.-11:45 a.m.
Podcasting is a new form of free radio broadcasting which uses the Internet as its mode of distribution. It involves recording your own audio and making it available online for other people to download. Creating a podcast doesn't require having much more gear than a computer and microphone, so it's a technology you can learn without many obstacles. Additionally, since podcasts are suited for play back on any computer or mp3 player, audiences can re-play podcasts anytime or anywhere they want. In this workshop, participants will learn how to create their own podcast. We will lead an in-depth tutorial on how to choose equipment, produce content, and record and publish a podcast. Then, we will create a mock-broadcast as a group to demonstrate how podcasting works. We will also listen to other podcasts and observe their strategies and design. Finally, we will discuss how they are being used to bolster grass-roots media movements both locally and around the world.
Panelists:
Allie Alvarado is a freelance multimedia producer. She has collaborated on several music projects around NYC, with releases on the Social Registry music label. She is currently a member of the beatscape quintet Eystek, and also devotes her time to teaching video and music production in different capacities.
Tianna Kennedy is the free103point9 Special Projects Coordinator and a founding member of the August Sound Coalition. She is also a New York-based cellist, sound and transmission artist, consultant, curator, events coordinator, and writer. Though her projects vary greatly, they are all underscored by her commitment to egalitarian and participatory practices. More

The Peeesseye and its many offshoots (Phantom Limb & Bison, Pee in My Face With Surgery, collaborations with Tetuzi Akiyama and Stephen O¹Malley, releases on Utech, Chocolate Monk, Archive, etc.) have been slinging mud and clawing at the foundations of the experimental noise underground for five years now. They've released 5 CDs and a 7 inch (all on Evolving Ear) in that time.
The Peeesseye¹s classification confounding music has been characterized by certain sage voices as ³coming off like a punk rock AMM² (Edwin Pouncey, the Wire) and like ³a slightly more western canon focused Sun City Girls² (Volcanic Tongue). Family Vineyard honcho Eric Weddle recently wrote in Signal to Noise that "Commuting Between the Surface & the Underworld, Peeesseye¹s new and fourth full-length, is arguably the most remarkable smorgasbord of back porch minimalism, sound poetry and urban decay of recent memory." Noise! is a sound performance festival started in 2005. This year free103point9 curates. Each year the "Incubator" program at Ontological Theater hosts a Noise! festival, a three-night multi-arts event designed to promote interest in new forms of sound art. The festival will feature short compositions and performances by established and emerging artists.

Each evening opens with a Radio 4x4 as the audience enters the theater. Radio 4x4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters to radios positioned throughout a performance space. Each radio receives only one of the signals, so that the audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals.

Long Distance Sitting Piece: Untitled Sit for Your Aetheric Body
By Michelle Nagai
For a network of 11 European-based art radio stations and free103point9.

This work is one in a series of sitting pieces. A collection of (usually live) performance works, these sitting pieces share several common themes, one of which is the presence of the performer and the listener in one "space" together. This broadcast's subtitle, Untitled Sit, is the generic label for a series of compositions originally devised for live performance in private homes. Each work, created and performed by the composer, is centered around the presence of a still and silent seated figure in close physical proximity to the audience. Variations on the basic form are permitted, and in all cases, a free-form exchange of sensory information is encouraged between performer, viewer and environment. This is an interactive radio broadcast. More

"Dancing walls stir the prairies"

Anna Friz + Eric Leonardson

"Sleep on, nothing remains. Dancing walls stir the prairies
and America drowns itself in machinery and lament.
I want the powerful air from the deepest night
to blow away flowers and inscriptions from the arch
where you sleep..."

-Federico Garcia Lorca, 1929

Anna Friz and Eric Leonardson are two sound/radio artists who live across the Great Lakes from one another: Anna in Toronto, Eric in Chicago. These cities are often called "sister cities": two large North American metropolitan cities that sprawl across the lakeshore and landscape; two cities that are similar in the way that Western cities often are, and nonetheless very different in history and character.

We propose to listen below the the newly-armed border rising between the two countries, below the surface of the map, below the opposing rhetorics of Fortress North America and calls for the U.S. to build a concrete wall between the two countries. We listen instead for the rhythms of daily movement in our respective places, and seek to enunciate the sounds in the cities that we hear and that haunt our dreams. In this we begin to play together, to mingle field recordings and music to create modulations of these two places. In so doing we conjure a third, composite, imagined city that resonates somewhere between the two geographical locations.

Anna Friz favours instruments that breathe and oscillate; employing accordion, concertina, harmonica, theremin, radio samples, ambient field recordings, and voice to conjure unusual sonic spaces. For Eric Leonardson instruments lie in the detritus of everyday life. He employs a self-made instrument that he calls the Springboard, an electroacoustic percussion instrument made from inexpensive and readily available materials. Applying his percussion skills to the rich enharmonic timbres of coil springs, plastic combs, pocket radio and crude wooden daxophones, Leonardson's work has been described as "...ritualistic music, electronically synthesized industrial vibrations miraculously created with ordinary household objects...."—Carol Burbank, Chicago Reader More

Bats emit sounds via echolocation, at typically two or three times higher pitch than that which the human ear can hear. Using an ultrasonic microphone paired with a customized scanning device, 31 Down will translate the bats' transmissions into audible frequencies. This show will feature bat recordings they made during their residency. More

Tom Roe
Tom Roe is a sound transmission artist sometimes known as DJ Dizzy. He co-founded online/microradio station free103point9 in Brooklyn and the Wave Farm, a 30-acre facility in Acra that serves as a study center, retreat, and avant-music performance site. Roe performs with transmitters and receivers using multiple bands, as well as prepared CDs, vinyl records, and various electronics. He creates radio soundscapes using locally available frequencies, often to the beat of manipulated pop song samples.

Jason Broome
Singer-songwriter and frequent Chronogram contributor Jason Broome has performed and recorded with the independent rock bands the Westport Sunrise Sessions, Tulula, and Gilding the Lily, all of whom have released recordings on his Diablo Dulce label. He has toured Europe and the US, contributed to film and TV soundtracks, and performed to raise money for a variety of charity and advocacy organizations. Perhaps described as avant-Americana, Broome's approach blends rootsy sounds with acerbic experimentalism.

Thomas Jack Hilton
Transplanted Texan Thomas Jack Hilton has also contributed often to Chronogram; as a talented photographer. But his flair for the lens is only one of his many artistic talents: In addition to also being an accomplished painter and illustrator, using found objects Hilton creates beautifully strange and striking sculptures that bring to mind the work of French Dadaist Marcel Duchamp and American installation artists Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. He has a sculpture in this show. More

Based on the concept of the 1966 work by Max Neuhaus titled, Public Supply (audio) (text) -telephones can be linked to a live radio broadcast via new technologies in order to create a live dialogue between activists social groups during public demonstrations and events. Max Neuhaus's revolutionary work was sponsored by WBAI in New York City and has been recreated in other cities. communication in real time is essential to the relaying and coverage of live, current events during public demonstrations, rallies and marches. It is important to be able to have immediate media coverage of such events in order to speed content delivery as well as eliminate any buffer or editing of information that may be imposed by competing corporate sponsored media.

This system is a communication device for participants in such social demonstrations as well as a way to inform the outside public of what is happening in real time for those involved.

Conflux Festival: Conflux is the annual New York festival for contemporary psychogeography, the investigation of everyday urban life through emerging artistic, technological and social practice. At Conflux, visual and sound artists, writers, urban adventurers and the public gather for four days to explore their urban environment. People from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures come together at the festival to re-imagine the city as a playground, a space for positive change and an opportunity for civic engagement. The Village Voice describes Conflux as a “network of maverick artists and unorthodox urban investigators…making fresh, if underground, contributions to pedestrian life in New York City, and upping the ante on today’s fight for the soul of high-density metropolises.” More

Evidence

Evidence is a creative partnership between composer/sound artists Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood. "Spheres of Influence (working title)" is a performance/installation of both live-performed and pre-recorded sounds being broadcast through a number of radio transmitters all tuned to identical (or nearly-identical) frequencies. The audience is equipped with radio receivers, and then encouraged to explore the points of “indecision” that exist between the various transmitters. In this way, each audience member participates in the composition/editing of the final piece by performing the interplay between our broadcasted material and the indeterminate artifacts of the transmission/reception process inherent in the installation. On September 19th, Evidence's project will be streamed on the web via free103point9 Online Radio. More

This 45-minute live, online sound performance is the latest in a series of pieces which explore and realign the relationship between the components of the linguistic sign: signifier and signified. More specifically, it functions as an examination of the dynamic relationship between text (content) and emotion (expression). It is my belief that our cognition of information and negotiation of meaning is largely based on the interdependence of these two elements. Poet GE Schwartz and performance artist Abbey Brace will be special guest vocalists. More

Specially commissioned by PERFORMA Radio, this collaborative radio work by British artist Ryan Gander and New York-based collective Dexter Sinister merges the script of a TV pilot with the form of a radio play. Interspersed with musical elements, 8 voices read from a script for a TV pilot written by the artists (and recently published as the book "Appendix Appendix"). A selection of Gander's earlier sound works are also incorporated within the script to become part of the radio play. Continuing the path of one medium wandering into another -- a TV pilot into a radio play -- radio merges with physical space, and the live broadcast is complemented by a performative presentation with a live audience in real space, filled with old radios all tuned to the program. Radios and site-specific transmission are provided courtesy of free103point9. More

La Superette is an annual event, an art sale held around the holiday season in December. We organize a temporary store where artists sell functional art in multiples at affordable prices. In addition to the sale there are musical performances as well as puppet shows, and video screenings that run throughout the day. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of La Superette, we are expanding the event into a full arts festival to take place over the first three weeks of December. Bon Anniversaire! free103point9 will have many items from its Dispatch Series on sale at this event. More

Chiyoko Szlavnics, Els Van Riel

"neural activity" - Van Riel (live video) and Szlavnics (sound) work with minute details of perception through a simultaneity of microscopic views through the lens (projected light) and soundwaves (beating frequencies) - both senses are acutely heightened; their work produces a conflict of neural activity as both receptive areas of rays, cones, and the basilar membrane and earDRUM send copious amounts of information to the reacting messengers of the brain - the result is heightened neural activity; unintentional associations are provoked by recognizable material, but abstraction immediately challenges the legitimacy of same associations; an additional level of activity ensues: the activity of thought and the abandonment of thought, as expectation gives way to experience - live video projection; sine tones & Pauline Kim, solo violin - "homage to james tenney." An evening composed of three pieces that have nothing in common ... 1: "music" and music video, based on what Madonna (Madonna Louise Ciccone) thinks it is (or a respirator sounds like); 2: A vinyl based topographic scratch around the world on behalf of the one and only TWV - the black beeliner with grooves - and 3: HCAT-MPIGS a piece for trombone, violin and annoying light; at the end of a questionable evening, questions can be asked and products can be bought at discount prices; the concert supported by the Ministerpresident of North-Rhine Westphalia and Harvestworks; with contributions by Dan Evans Farkas, Phill Niblock and Yasunao Tone.
